DON'T GET BURNED BY BAD ADVICE

FAQ'ING ANSWERS

How does sun protection work?

Sunscreen protects skin from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) using filters that absorb, reflect, and scatter UVR to help prevent skin damage, ageing, sunburn, and skin cancer.

What does SPF mean?

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measures protection against UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB?

UVA penetrates deeper and causes aging and long-term damage. UVB affects the skin surface and causes sunburn. Both contribute to skin cancer.

How much sunscreen should I apply to my face/body?

Use about two finger lengths for the face and a shot glass amount (30 ml) for the full body about 15 minutes before sun exposure, and again 30 minutes later. Then, reapply every 1-2 hours, and always after sweating, swimming, or towelling.

When should I apply sunscreen (before or after moisturiser)?

Apply sunscreen after moisturiser and before makeup.

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

Reapply every 2 hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towelling.

Do I need sunscreen indoors or on cloudy days?

Use a weather app to check UV levels. If the forecast is that the UV will be above 3 then you should wear sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy. UVR penetrates clouds and windows, so protection is still needed.

Should I wear sunscreen in winter?

Use a weather app to check UV levels. If the forecast is that the UV will be above 3 then you should wear sunscreen. In the UK, UV levels can be above 3 for over 200 days a year.

What’s the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreens are better suited to sensitive skin, but can leave a visible cast on the skin. Chemical sunscreens tend to feel lighter, but may be problematic for sensitive and inflammatory skin.

Are mineral sunscreens more natural than chemical sunscreens?

Ironically the more accurate term for mineral filters is ‘inorganic’ and the more accurate term for chemical filters is ‘organic’. Both types of filters sit on the surface and absorb, reflect, and scatter UVR.

Are sunscreens harmful?

There isn't good evidence that active ingredients in sunscreen (some of which will find their way through to the bloodstream) are doing us any harm. The same can’t be said for excessive UV exposure, which can lead to skin cancer – the most common type of cancer in countries including the UK and US.

Are spray sunscreens as effective as lotions?

They can be, but make sure you apply enough! About two finger lengths for the face and a shot glass amount (30 ml) for the full body and reapply every 1-2 hours.

What is ‘broad-spectrum’ sunscreen?

It protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

What does ‘water-resistant’ actually mean?

It means protection lasts 40 or 80 minutes in water or sweat, but reapplication is still needed.

Can sunscreen prevent premature aging?

Yes. It reduces wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity caused by UV exposure.

Can darker skin tones skip sunscreen?

No. All skin tones can experience UV damage and should use sunscreen.

Can sunscreen expire?

Yes. Most last 2–3 years from manufacture and 6-12 months once opened. Check your bottle for specific guidance, and never use an expired sunscreen as it’s likely to be less effective.

Does sunscreen block vitamin D?

It can reduce vitamin D production, but most people still produce enough.

Yes. UV damage can occur without visible burning and still increases skin cancer risk.
